Piero and Chiara were once a married couple, but because of their irreconcilable differences they have been separated for ages and no longer have anything to do with each other. Their daughter Margherita, who is about to get married, would like them to be friends again, and so tells them that as her wedding gift she wants them to come to the wedding together. So Piero and Chiara leave Milan together, heading for Stromboli. They are two profoundly different people. He’s a Latin teacher who votes left-wing, writes children’s stories and still dreams of being a success, in a world where even children seem to have lost their imagination.
He has got used to living on his own and wears shabby, old-fashioned clothes and doesn’t care what people think of him. His ex-wife, on the other hand, is a dealer, votes right-wing, lives with a plastic surgeon and, even if she’s probably more superficial than Piero, is also gifted with practical skills that help her to be strong in any situation. During their trip from Northern to Southern Italy, with all its different scenarios, as they meet and listen to the locals talk about their homes and their problems, the two of them find excuses to clash on practically everything, from civil unions to immigration right up to drugs and prostitution.
